What this is
A free speed reader. Paste a link and it fetches the article, strips the navigation and the ads, and flashes it a few words at a time — up to four, grouped so a group never straddles a sentence. Your eyes stop travelling and the words come to you.
One letter of every flash is pinned to the column those two hairlines mark, and it stays there for the whole session: that column is the only thing your eye has to hold. Speed runs from 100 to 1000 words per minute, and punctuation gets a longer beat. Lose the thread and Read as text gives you the article as ordinary prose with a highlight moving through it at the same pace — read normally for a while, then pick the flash reader back up where the highlight got to.
